The Penquis Foster Grandparent Program has an exciting volunteer opportunity for seniors, which offers great personal and modest financial benefits.

Volunteers, are income eligible people 55 years of age or older ($24,120 for one or $32,480 for two) who love working with children.

These Foster Grandparents volunteer for a minimum of 15 hours a week. The volunteer works one on one with students, who have been identified as needing extra help and attention, at the school, headstarts, or non-profits.

The stipend and transportation reimbursement are tax-free and most receive a meal from the school where they volunteer.

For their volunteer hours, Foster Grandparents receive a nontaxable stipend, presently $2.65 an hour. This stipend does not affect any other benefits the senior citizen may be receiving such as Social Security, food stamps or subsidized housing. This stipend cannot be counted as income for any purpose.

The design of this program provides a dual benefit to two of our most vulnerable populations: senior citizens and children. The rewards for both generations that occur during this relationship are monumental.
